EU Food Aid Bound for Ethiopia Arrived Djibouti Port

The first in a series of European Union food aid shipments to drought-stricken Ethiopia have arrived the port of Djibouti. The food aid, which consists of 30,000 tonnes of Wheat will be distributed to communities that are most affected such as the Afar and Somali Region of Ethiopia.

A second and third shipment will arrive in as early as September.

Ethiopia has suffered this year with severe drought and poor harvest due to failed rains resulting in massive food shortages.

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), the World Food Programme (WFP) and the U.N. children’s agency UNICEF jointly said on Monday that $230 million are urgently needed from donors to feed the 4.5 million Ethiopians that are at risk of starvation.

The country of 96 million people is one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies.
