POLICE in Taita Taveta County have arrested 146 people among them Somali and Ethiopian nationals for allegedly being in the country illegally.

Speaking at his office in Mwatate on Friday, County Commissioner Onigoi Ole Sosio said 96 suspected illegal immigrants were arrested following a raid in Kasighau and Maungu trading centers in Voi Sub County on Thursday. They did not have National IDs or passports.

“These individuals were apprehended while loitering at the trading centers,” he said.

The commissioner further said that the police on Monday this week intercepted 50 Ethiopian nationals who were enroute to an unknown destination at the Taveta border Town.

“The county security organs have been put on alert following the recent terrorist attacks in the country. We are not taking any chances,” said Onigoi.

Onigoi asked the public to report to the police any suspicious individuals..

“The Nyumba Kumi initiative is now more relevant than ever before. You have to know who your neighbour is and his daily activities. Anybody even if well known to you engaging in suspicious activities must be reported,” he said.
